Who cares about sociology anyway?

So I've decided maybe I'll begin to write again, not because I have nothing to do with my time, because I do. I'm going to write again because I love it and I miss it and when I look back in ten years time I'll be able to see just how much I enjoyed being young and that will be magic.

My first semester of university has ended; I have made friends and memories and both good and bad choices but I have also made some general discoveries that relate to being a young woman in the twenty first century. These are things that I wish someone had told me this time fifteen weeks ago.
I'm going to share them, you don't have to read them, as I said, I'm writing for me.

Here we go!

1. Nobody is going to care if you get up or if you don't. You can sleep until whatever time you want to, but in the end it is you that will suffer the consequences. Ultimately you'll be on your own with tears in your eyes watching romantic movies while you should be studying. But cramming is doable. Cramming is great.

2. Whatever you do, make sure that you watch what you're eating. You Dad isn't going to be with you to cook your meals or tell you to have two biscuits instead of three. I don't hear the words "Everything in moderation, Maeveo" everyday, and as much as I hated it back then I miss it now.

3. Sometimes it turns out that the people you adored so much throughout your childhood and teenage years turn out to be smiles on campus or 'I haven't seen you in so long' hugs in nightclubs.
But sometimes, in really special situations, you get to share your university experience with the people who you love the most in your life.

4. If it is meant for you, it won't pass you by.
This little point relates to my Iseabail, who had the craziest first semester of anyone I know in the world. But I am so glad that she is home and she is so close and she is only a no.4 to Blackrock and then a dart to the Aviva away. She is my best friend and my life line and she is always there when I need to cry over idiots. What more could a girl ask for in a best friend?

5.Make sure you make time for the people you care for from home. Whether your adventures take the form of McFlurry Monday's with a premed student or going to the gym with your home girl so that you can physically push each others limits because flat tummies and super bums don't develop themselves. These are the link to your past and are probably the best people to confide in.

6. There will be plenty of boys who take your fancy, probably too many. Many of these boys will tell you really lovely things, and paint lovely pictures and then leave you crying and picking up the pieces in your bed at 1:26am when you should really be finishing essays or studying for Christmas exams. These boys probably aren't worth it and you need to remember that it is not you who is wrong, it is them.

7. Do all your readings on time, simple.

8. Join societies, just do it, In the societies you join you will find unique people who will offer you unique friendships. It is never too late to join and experience all the lovely things that something you enjoy can offer.

9. For fuck sake, Maeve, whatever you do, don't wear your heart on your sleeve. Honestly it will just end up leaving you in lots of little pieces. You are not simply something to be walked over, you are made of stronger stuff than you imagine, and ultimately, you don't need a text message.

10. Last one, enjoy every minute of it, because the semester will actually fly by. Make the most out of every experience. First year only happens once, hopefully.
